Part 1: Getting Started With A Proper Diet To Fuel The Muscles!

Food-Healthy-Diet-Weight-Loss-Web-Graphic_20100616142315_640_480So I’m assuming that you that you have checked with your doctor to make sure you can start a fitness program without any major concerns.  Great, so lets get started with your diet.

Now when I say diet – don’t fret!  When most people hear the word “diet”, they immediately start to think they are going to have to starve themselves.  That is not what I am talking about here.  When I speak of a diet, I am talking about good nutrition – and lots of it – to fuel your body for muscle growth and conditioning.

Now here is my legal disclaimer.  I am not a nutritionist nor am I a personal trainer.  I do not have any licenses or certifications in this field.  I never felt the need for them, not that they aren’t important for personal trainers to have.  What I tell you is for informational or entertainment purposes only.  I am basically speaking from experience of what has worked for me and from what has worked for others.  I encourage you to do your own research whenever possible.  Don’t always believe everything you see on TV or read.

I am going to start with the basics to get you started, and as we go along, I will add some other things when I feel it is appropriate or if I learn of something new.  What I have seen from so many other diets is that most people have trouble sticking with them.  Most of them are just too complicated or take too much time for the average person to do.  Many of the diet plans that claim to help you shred the pounds quickly, usually backfire on you.  Yeah, you may lose the weight quick, but what usually happens is you reach a point where the weight boomerangs back and you end up gaining back all the weight you lost and then some!  That is why I don’t like diets – they just don’t work long-term for most people!

In case I have not mentioned it yet, I am nearly 52 years old.  I tell you this so you will have some perspective on where I am at with my teaching.  But there is no way for me to know where you are at in life – young, older, underweight, overweight, active, couch potato, etc., but no matter the situation, and as long as your doctor gave you the green light, you have it within you to make major changes for the good!

I have been going to the gym off and on since I was 17.  From that time on until several years ago, I never really paid much attention to nutrition.  As a kid, I had a major weight problem – like in the opposite direction!  I had lots of trouble gaining weight and I was built like a stick in high school, except I had the additional disadvantage of being short – so basketball, football, and most everything else was not an option for me!  I was not athletic at all, just a geek.  Even the band would not let me in LOL!  So as you can imagine, I wanted to build muscle like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno, Frank Zane, Lee Labrada, and other bodybuilding greats of that time.

What is your body type and what are you looking to achieve in the next few months? Depending on what stage you are at will determine how you are going to have to eat.  I will continue with more on that and nutrition in the next post.  Stay tuned…
